Portion Pinchas – the Torah in a Nutshell!

Portion Pinchas – the Torah in a Nutshell!

The portion is Filled with All the Goodness of G-d!

So-
On a simple level the portion explains Judaism soup to nuts:

The Almighty (up front in the portion)
tells Moses to Count the People - BECAUSE EVERYBODY COUNTS!
Something UNHEARD OF SO LONG AGO-
and sadly still unheard of in many places in the world!

(Never put anyone down - because you never know who secretly is doing Big Mitzvas!)

Then - the last portions- give us rules of
CELEBRATING - through the TEMPLE- for

All the holidays – that make up a Whole Year

All the People are holy- and every day of the year is holy.

But is there a deeper message hidden in the middle?

The five daughters of Zelophchad confront Moses and say-

"We want a piece of Israel when everyone gets land - not just the guys!"

And Moshe - who never thought to confront the Almighty - has to ask-

And the answer is - YES!

Israel is for everyone -

and then we learn the rules of Celebrating Every Day in the Temple.... all year round ...

EVEN IN THE SUMMER!  So  ...  Welcome to Jewish Adulthood you great bar-mitzva kids

and Welcome to Jerusalem the Heart of Israel my birthright students!

Shabbat Shalom - and Mazel Tov to Everyone!

Portion Balak - the Gentiles and the Donkey - and the Ohr Hachaim's Yahrzeit

Portion Balak - the Gentiles and the Donkey - and the Ohr Hachaim's Yahrzeit

This portion has three unanswered questions I would like to take on!

The ideas are only my thoughts and please do not blame any other rabbis or the Almighty or anyone if my ideas don't fit anyone's intellectual or religious system.

1.
Why is this portion named after a heathen sorcerer - and what does that mean for Jews in 2018?

2.
Why was a heathen prophet riding on a donkey - 40 years after Pharoah watched his hundreds of HORSES drown at the Red Sea?
Or didn't he own a camel?

3.
What are we to learn from the anniversary  of the Holy Chaim Ibn Atar's  passing - which was this week?

First number three!

And it has to do with leaving messages in the cracks of the Holy Western Wall in Jerusalem!

The story is told that "the CHIDA" (student of Rabbi Chaim ibn Atar - and later the Genius Rabbi of Bagdad) was walking in Jerusalem when an old Kabbalist stopped him.
"You know there is a shining light about you!"
"No, what?" he answered.
The kabbalist asked him what he had done different that day.
A little embarassed, Chida said "I did my Rabbi's wishes - but a little late."
"How so ?" asked the older man.
"My Rabbi asked me some time ago to leave a note that he wrote in one of the cracks of the Western Wall - and I didn't do it. Maybe I thought it wasn't important? But
My teacher and Rabbi just passed away - so I hurried today to do it."
The kabbalist asked the Chida to walk him to the Wall and show him the note - and they opened it and the note said:

"Holy Spirit, please ask for mercy before the Almighty for my student Chida - Chaim Yosef  - among the leaders of Israel"

From that time on - after people heard that one of the Holy Rabbi Chaim Ben Atar's last acts
was to write a prayer and leave it at The Wall - people started leaving those kinds of messages.

Today hundreds of such notes are left at The Wall - the Kotel- for the Holy Spirit -

and who knows when the Almighty hears those prayers? Maybe always!

We just know when the Almighty listened to the curses of Balak and Bilam - and MADE THEM BLESS THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL?

For Number TWO - many Torah commentators discuss Bilam's relationship with his donkey! That's not my question.

King Balak offers this Bilam-the-evil-prophet MILLIONS to come to the "Moav White House"
and curse the Israelites -
wouldn't you think he'd take a limousine? Or a chariot like Pharoah had?

So many commentators focus on the funny part - with the Talkiing Donkey -
who gets beaten 3 times by the greedy Gentile Prophet -
but Still seems he Gives the Rider Good Advice (which Bilam never followed).

I think the donkey is really ALWAYS talking to Bilam-the wierd-prophet!
There are lots of donkeys out there - but this one
Always sees things that Bilam doesn't! And Bilam obviously NEEDS the donkey -
or thinks he does! But Never Listens!

The whole portion is filled with BAD ADVICE (not from the donkey)-
and stubborn greed and hatred and mean spirits.

We all need to get real and listen to holy good advice - like in the Torah -
and avoid greed and meanness and hatred (like Bilam's and Balak's)
and not listen to greedy prophets and not need spiritual donkeys

AND THE FIRST QUESTION...

At the end of the portion finally

Moses is mentioned - but he is CRYING at the entrance to the Tabernacle because the people again just didn't get it!

This is a week too a Democratic Party member (Cortez) who criticizes Israel
won a NYS primamry against an incumbent not known for speaking against Israel.

Is she a heathen sorcerer - or just playing into hatred sponsored by terror organizations
eating at the moral fabric of America? Either way we need to watch out! The Torah warns us!

The world has a lot of liars in high places, often blaming the Jews for surviving and not disappearing.

We neeed to stay away from heathens and sorcerers and public liars like king Balak and advisor Bilam!

Yes in 2018 there are still people trying to curse the light of the Israelite -
so let's read the portion and look for our own answers to today's issues
and turn bad-vibes into BLESSINGS.

Shabbat Shalom
Love from Israel

Portion Shelach – what did you really see?

Portion Shelach – what did you really see?

This week's portion starts with the spies sent by Moshe to
scout out Israel (Canaan)
before the Israelites entered the land.

Rabbi Carlebach always said "You have to look at Israel with
Moshiach Eyes
" – eyes of hope love and togetherness!
Somehow the spies missed seeing the beauty there.

The Zohar and Kabbala look at the portion as an attempt by some
"leaders"
to keep Israelites focused in the desert – and in the end
that's what happened – but
with all the generation passing away BEFORE they could enter
Israel with their children.

Rabbi Silver of Yeshiva Simchat Shlomo (the Sholom Brodt Yeshiva) in Jerusalem

Tied the failure of the spies to their
despair of their children succeding to enter the land of Israel.

But don't we know today that the potential of our children -
and everyone's children -
is NEAR LIMITLESS?

Never give up on children - or anyone!

And if you don't have kids-
Learn how to optimize your own inner child too!

As best we can we should look at each person and each situation - and help

MAKE THE BEST OF THEM!

That is also why Shabbos is such a great gift -

it gives us a time and a way to reflect to understand - and to bring people together to try

to bring out the Best of the World.

Shabbat Shalom

Portion Beha'alotcha : the Light is INFINITE

Portion Beha'alotcha : the Light is INFINITE

(and thank you for some of this idea from Yeshiva Simchat Shlomo in Jerusalem)

The portion this week speaks of LIGHTing in the Holy Places

Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach explains it is to teach us to Light Up The Whole World -

to give strength to us ALL to know that the Almighty's Light is Infinite

and gives us Infinite Strength to Do Right

Then there is a section on complaints by the Israelites in the desert
(who really wants to live in the dry hot desert anyway?
It's not so much fun even if you live under a Date Palm with a water spring next to your tent ...)

And then at the end Miriam is sick - and Moshe Rabaynu - Moses- prays "Please G-d heal her" -

and the L-rd answers him ...and her ... and Aron...MAY WE ALL SEE MIRACULOUS HEALINGS

And here is an example from history of SPREADING THE LIGHT against all odds - just to serve the Almighty
and our people!

Shabbat Shalom from beautiful Israel

Don Isaac Abravanel - "The Abarbanel"

(1437-1508) from an article

Don Isaac Abravanel was one of the greatest Jewish statesmen in European history. He was not merely a loyal and strictly religious Jew, but a great scholar, Bible commentator and philosopher. He was the last of the long line of great Jewish leaders and heroes of the Spanish Golden Age.

Isaac was born into a wealthy and learned family in Portugal. His father Judah was state treasurer of Portugal, and a great favorite of Alfonso V, king of Portugal. Isaac received a thorough Jewish education, and took a keen interest in languages and philosophy. Later he succeeded his father in the service of the king.

In his greatness, Isaac never forgot his humble brethren. He used his vast wealth to support the needy. Abravanel also used his great influence to better the position of his brethren in other lands.

. In the year 5243, Don Joao II began a policy that aimed at getting rid of the nobility, particularly the ministers of state that served his father. Abravanel learned just in time that the king beheaded several of the highest ranking officers, and that he was slated -to share a similar fate. He was on the way to answer the king's call, but on learning what awaited him, Abravanel fled to Toledo in Spain, where his family had once lived. Accompanied by his wife and two children, Abravanel arrived in Toledo almost penniless, as the ungrateful. John had confiscated all his wealth.

In Spain Ferdinand and Isabella in the very same year when the notorious Torquemada became head of the Inquisition in Spain, Abarvanel officially became treasurer to the king and queen (two years before the expulsion of the Jews from Spain.

On the 9th of Av, 5252 (July 30, 1492), Abravanel and his family were on the march with the rest of their co-religionists He gave up his exalted position and joined his beloved brethren in exile and suffering.  The young king of Naples, however, ignored the protest and demands of the cruel rulers of Spain invited Abravanel to the royal house and appointed him as his adviser.  Unfortunately Naples was captured by King Charles of France in the following year, and King Alfonso II fled to Sicily and Abravanel accompanied his Majesty in exile, and continued to serve him with a fatherly devotion.

Having lost all his wealth to the French conquerors, Abravanel suffered poverty and hardship. He finally settled in Venice where.  the rulers of Venice invited him to become a leading statesmen of that Venetian Republic where he died in the year 5269, at the age of 71, deeply mourned by the Jewish and non-Jewish citizens of Venice. The leading rulers of Venice attended his funeral, and he was laid to rest in Padua.

Abarbanel on our Portion explains that the people's complaints in the Sinai Desert were  Offhanded comments - and these can be as corrosive as outright attacks, This idea from the Torah teaches us how careful we must be to avoid even joking speech that will be damaging, and instead use words that will be rewarding.

(thanks for this note - and also to Shlomo Ressler's
Quotation of the Week: "Judaism is not a religion, it's a relationship." in his

Lelamed WeeklyDvar )

Portion Bechu Kotau ... Warnings Hope and Evaluation

Portion Bechu Kotau ... Warnings Hope and Evaluation

How much of what is really good for us?

We see some guidelines as the portion starts with a concept of freedom and ends by teaching that freedom is related to how to be giving
and letting go sometimes...

In the middle are dire warnings
For the Israelites in the desert on the way to Israel

And for us - if we do not follow the Jewish Path to Life - especially on Israel's Holy Turf

A little story - a teaching from the time of the Alter Rebbe - first Chabad Rebbe

And the teaching might be the Same for Prime Minister Netanyahu during this hard week of military action

And it is good for us to remember too - for this Saturday Night Yom  Yerushalayim-
The day the Jewish State reclaimed (in 1967) the Capital City of Jerusalem from the Jordanian Usurpers (1948)

Hilel Paritsher was a young student
who  Wanted a private audience with the first
Chabad Rabbi - not always easy to come by

He  wanted to impress the Alter Rebbe
with a Tora thougt - so he

Snuck in to the office and hid in a closet

The Rebbe got wind of the student's hiding and said out loud

"MAYBE EVALUATION IN SOUL SEARCHING IS BETTER THAN hiding and TRYING TO IMPRESS"

Soul Searching ...is valuating your soul - and getting to know yourself in the context of your LIFE

The warnings in the Tora Portion this week are still good for us all

Even Three Thousand Years after they were delivered at  Sinai...

The idea is

 to take a moment now
not just to think what we are doing - but also to evaluate in the context of Judaism and Israel

Remembering  the Loving Warnings from our parents

  And forbears

Going back to Moses even

and Taking  A Minute each day to think lovingly
On Children ... Parents ... Friends ... and HISTORY

On how it was to reunite with  Jerusalem after 2000 years' separation

And how to evaluate (see the end of the portion) and integrate (the portion talks about redeeming each other and each others' homes)

along the Jewish Path to Life

Portion Emor - and Lag BaOmer This Week - Two Portions of Holy People -Two versions of holiness?

Portion Emor - and Lag BaOmer This Week - Two Portions of Holy People -Two versions of holiness?

It's funny how LAST week in Israel we read the portion "Kedoshim" (Holy People)
and this week in Emor it says in a few places "Be Holy"! Why not put hese items in the same Portion?

The head of the Shaalvim Hesder (1/2 army) yeshiva wrote this week (and I paraphrase)  about:

"Holiness before G-d - and Holiness between People"

He writes this explains the difference in rules between the Sabbath and the Holidays

Sabbath you need to feel close to the Almighty

Holidays are HALF TO FEEL THE HOLINESS OF BEING CLOSE TO PEOPLE

Rabbi Lasri on the radio this AM mentioned that
when the Rabbis of the Talmud disagree
on the rules they are deciding for the Torah

some of the Rabbis (like Rabbi Yehuda) are dealing WITH THE EXISTING STATE

while others - Like Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai - the Master of the Secret Kabbala

decide according to the HOLINESS IN THE TORAH AND THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL

Is the world heavenly or is it mundane and what you see is what you got?

According to the Torah we the Jewish People are all supposed to be a holy nation

The portion of Emor ends with the Jewish Holidays reviewed

and with Shavuote coming up in a couple of weeks

we should all remember how great throngs of Israelites always came to the Temple in Jerusalem

shared meals and returned lost items AND

SANG PRAISES IN THE TEMPLE TO THANK THE ALMIGHTY FOR WHAT WE HAVE

This Shabbat and Next Thursday Lag B' Omer we can start

getting ready for the great Holiday of Receiving the Torah

By thinking and preparing a little - both for the world we see -

and for the world as wonderful as it can be with the help of G-d

Shabbat Shalom

Portion Tazria - Lepers and Laws for Today

Portion Tazria - Lepers and Laws for Today

Portion Tazria in Israel this shabbat– and in the Diaspora a week Behind?
Because Israel has 7 days of Passover and the rest of the world celebrates 8! Including last Shabbat!
/
Leprosy was a MAJOR illness in previous generations – and the Concept of Leprous Regimes in the world is still with us.  So many wars and despicable rulers and armies.

So the Torah teaches ... and the Rabbis explain ... and our JOB is to be a Light unto the World.

Imagine if Gaza were in Syria - at least a million would be dead by now! That's why Egypt refuses to take BACK the Gaza they ruled until 1967!

The spiritual Wars of Today and the Laws of Moses:

Rebbe Nachman of Breslav told his student Rebbe Noson that
the laws of Leprosy in this week's portion can be looked at as
a metaphor for the Battle of the Righteous against the Stern Decrees in Life.

Why after the world defeats ISIS in Syria and Iraq does Assad pull out his Chemical War Machine to kill those he doesn't like?
Every day is a TEST – of our View of the world and our Reaction to Life!

Meanwhile the leprous leaders Asad and Putin have not been stopped - but only the Almighty sends the Priests to Heal the Disease (leprosy years ago and now -
The same kinds of crazy rulers as always?

Maybe the US and England and France can do something because the weapons of mass murder never were destroyed-
as promised 10-15 years ago.

Maybe Israel and A FEW Arab states will form an alliance to end war mongering in the Middle East
(Egypt and Israel - and sometimes Jordan - seem to have it together).

The law is "if it's not clear - the leprosy -
the Priest orders a waiting period..."

May our Shabbos be a peaceful light to the world.

Shabbat Shalom

Rabbi Andy Eichenholz

Portion Tzav - Passover and Parents and Presents

Portion Tzav - Passover and Parents and Presents

Time to Prepare

This week's portion starts out saying "tell Aron and his sons"

And continues in a bit "I give them the Matzos of the Mincha (an offering in the Temple – of the desert and later in Israel

And it ends with Aron and his sons being Installed in the Tabernacle – and FOREVER

So what's the difference between Aron and his family – and the rest of the Jewish people

And why MATZOS ? Couldn't the Almighty just leave it at "Temple Bar-B-Ques go to the Priests?" They need MATZA?

Okay next week on Friday Night we celebrate the First Seder – Matza – means Freedom and Responsibility and Family and – Afikoman presents for the KIDS? (Parents are allowed to get themselves Afikoman presents too! And maybe SHOULD!)

In the 10 Commandments it says "Honor your Father and Mother –

And in the Shulchan Orach (Code of Jewish Law) it describes HOW.

But the Portion IS A TEACHING from the Almighty and Moses that

Aron and the kids should NOT LEAVE THE TENT OF HTHE MEETING for SEVEN DAYS

And eat in HOLINESS (not too many off-color jokes) – and THAT may be the connection for MATZAS here –

Since the Installation was JUST BEFORE PASSOVER

Which should be celebrated SEVEN days (however you can)

AND WITH THE FAMILY – at home or away

And may we all get ready for a GREAT AND HAPPY PASSOVER

Love and Shabbos from Israel

Portion Vayikra Sacrifices

Portion Vayikra Sacrifices

Nothing really is a make up for anything we do wrong

but

the Torah taught the world about

forgiveness

  And how
we need to sacrifice some times  ...  just so we can feel how

We affect the world

And each other!

The idea of a temple ...  Which  we saw in last weeks portion

Is to elevate us spirritually

But if we " fall  " ...

then a little

extra giving of ourselves can    Fix things

so we learn:

Giving makes for forgiving ... in the Big Picture

Shabbat Shalom

Portion: VaYakHel Pekooday and Parah

Portion: VaYakHel Pekooday and Parah

Based on an Idea from the Local Jerusalem Papers today

When the Tabernacle was set up it was covered in clouds for a while -
SO PEOPLE WOULD CONSIDER THE HOLINESS and not just all the gold and copper
and fine work and artistry that went into the building of the Tabernacle!

The lesson:
Always THINK what is REALLY HOLY and don't just look at the OUTSIDES

Shabbat Shalom
