Portion Naso – Commitment Jealousy and Committment
The Portion starts with the work assignments of the Levites
And ends with the donations of the Presidents of the 12 Tribes to HELP those Levites.
So where does Jealousy come in?
I once went to dinner in a Brooklyn Kosher restaurant and my dinner partner pointed
"Do you see that guy? He was beaten up in this same place by a fellow who claimed that he was interfering in his marriage."
So in the middle of the Portion comes the ruling of "A jealous husband" – who needs to bring his wife to the Temple courtyard, they offer a sacrifice, and expect
Divine divination as to what happened and if what follows will be a curse or a blessing. (The Talmud states that after many years the ceremony "stopped working" because there were so many cases and negative findings).
In my Talmud study this week we find the crux of the story of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel from the breakaway kingdom of "Northern Israel."
She wanted a neighbor's field but the neighbor refused to sell –
So she hired 2 liars to claim the neighbor had blasphemed the Almighty and King Ahab
And the punishment was to execute the neighbor and take the field!
My son Azi today told me he is advertising around to find a kidney donor for a 27 year old friend of his so I have joined in the search. (I knew both parents - sadly the father died years ago).
Last night I was supposed to be at a wedding up North but my ride (grandfather of the bride) waited 2 hours for other people to show up – so luckily I didn't go. They got there late and eventually got home 4AM!
My friends apologized for making me wait around so long – but as I wrote:
The Almighty has his plans! And everything works out for the good!
Go know!
Naso (the Portion name) means "raise up" – raise up (and carry) the Desert Temple – and the Levites who had to carry it during the journey of 40 years in the desert!

And let's see Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach on Parshas Bamidbar
I want you to know the deepest deepest depths.
What is the holy book of Bamidbar (4th of the 5) all about?
Shemos is all about how we became a nation and received the Torah.
In Vayikra we learn how to serve G-d.
But you know something so crazy … you can still fall to the lowest depths (and)
Do you know why? Because it takes more than all this!.
You know friends, you can do everything right in life and yet not get to the point...
we see that even Moshe Rabbeinu can make a mistake, it's possible because we are just human beings.
When I am very close to somebody, the closeness does not depend on how much they are doing my will, that would be the most shallow relationship there is.
Mamash our relationship with G-d has to go so much deeper…
The book of Bamidbar begins when mamesh the Ribbono Shel Olam is counting Yidden,
…counting every Yid's individual strength
and He is begging us, "Yiddelach, each of you have to find your own connection (to G-d and the Eternal Torah and people)
which is beyond just doing everything right and not doing wrong."
Good Shabbos

It's because no one in the world knows the REAL Jews!
I prayed in Jerusalem this morning after which a lecture on the portion was given – by one of the teachers in the GREAT SYNAGOGUE (who by-the-way donated a kidney recently - an amazing act of mercy - and faith).
The haftaras and the double portion he explained – in brief – discuss some of the approximately 180 MITZVAS of the Torah RELATED TO THE LAND OF ISRAEL (out of 613 in total).
Rabbi Hirschler pointed out this morning that "it's ALL about trusting in the Almighty".
Here is something he taught from these Portions – about the Holiness of the land.
Portion Emor – the week a Pregnant Woman was Murdered
Why? So as not to be saddened and thus not perform their duties in the Holy Temple –
On holidays one is allowed to cook (even for guests) – not on Shabbat.
So the portion says: "6 Days you should work – and on the 7th Day – Rest and Refresh".
And the answer is: 6 days of the major Jewish holidays
PASSOVER SUKKOT ROSHHASHONO 2days each -
– cook – but on the 7th holiday –
is Lag B'Omer ? The Day of Passing of the great Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai –
Student or Rabbi Akiva
And it is the day that G-d – through his work ZOHAR (meaning SHINING) gave us the secrets of the Torah.
You know what the secret is? The secret is something that fills your heart so much,
it fills you with longing and it fills you with depth.
A secret is like a little bit of light beyond vessels.
Reb Zadok HaCohen says, "How do you know how much somebody loves you? When somebody loves you, they want to tell you all their secrets."
You know what level Rabbi Shimon gave us for Lag B'Omer? He gives us the deepest depths;
how much the Torah loves us and how much we need to love the Torah.
